General Advertisements of Interest
This interesting array of advertisements published in auto magazines illustrates the focus on "modification" to the standard vehicle. Additions such as recorded music (record player and casette) were popular, and expensive. Even a car radio was a significant option being listed in the BMC accessories catalog at about 54 pounds ($100) in the mid sixties where the price of an exterior mirror was about $4 which makes the price of the AM radio in today's money at about $1000! The quest for more miles per gallon is strongly represented as well as extra instrumentation from inlet manifold vacuum to seat belt warning light. Many of these accessories would now be considered standard equipment (for those that persisted) and accessories in modern cars are more limited to cosmetic items rather than anything mechanical.
